Denied a Kiss, 92-Year-Old Woman Fires Gun at Neighbor
A Florida man has just experienced first hand what William Congreve meant when he wrote “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” in the play “The Mourning Bride” centuries ago.
Helen Staudinger, 92, had asked her neighbor, Dwight Bettner, 53, for some smooch time, authorities said. When Bettner refused, that is when all hell broke loose. Staudinger, from Fort McCoy, Florida, reportedly took a semi-automatic pistol and fired four shots at her neighbor’s home, forcing Bettner to run for cover. “If my head would have been over just a little bit further, (a bullet) probably would have hit me in the back of the head,” Bettner told Reuters.
Bettner said that he had noticed that Staudinger was attracted to him since he moved into the neighborhood several months ago. “I’ve taken her trash out for her, just neighborly stuff,” Bettner said. “I guess she just took that as something else.” Then on Monday, Staudinger went to Bettner’s house and refused to leave when asked to. ” I want a kiss before I leave,” Staudinger reportedly told Bettner.
Staudinger was arrested and remained in jail as of Tuesday. She faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into a dwelling.
