Diane Lane Cast as Martha Kent in “Superman” Reboot

Diane Lane has been tapped to play Martha Kent in the upcoming reboot of “Superman,” which is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2012.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced the casting move late Wednesday in a development that director Zack Snyder said was very “important” to the film. Lane, 46, will play mother to 27-year-old Henry Cavill, who was earlier picked to resurrect Superman and his alter-ego Clark Kent. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination,” Snyder said in a statement.

The next step now for Snyder is to find the actor who will play Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive father. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Costner is one of the actors being considered to play Jonathan Kent, while Viggo Mortensen was reported to be among the actors in the running for the role of super villain General Zod.
