“Expendables” Debuts on Top with $35M
Sylvester Stallone has proven that his old-school slam-bang action film can still bring in the dough, as “The Expendables” raked in an estimated $35 million at the weekend box office.
“The Expendables,” which boasts an all-star cast that includes Jet Li, Jason Statham, and Mickey Rourke, outmuscled Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love,” which could muster only an estimated $24 million for second place. “The Expendables” attracted the older, male crowd with its 1980s action style. Adding more star power to “Expendables” were cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Last week’s box-office leader, “The Other Guys,” slid to third place with $18 million, which raised its total to $70 million. “Inception” continued to take in money for director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., as the sci-fi thriller took $11.8 million for a $249 cume.
“Scott Pilgrim vs The World” was the big loser at the box office this weekend, as the film based on the “Scott Pilgrim” comic series took a paltry, three-day estimate of $11 million despite generally positive reviews and the status of lead star Michael Cera as an emerging star.
