F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Hamilton Wins as Vettel Retires

With Sebastian Vettel forced to retire by a punctured tire early in the race, Lewis Hamilton took charge at the Yas Marina Circuit to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix over Fernando Alonso.

It was a big victory for Hamilton, as it ended a long drought that lasted four months. The Englishman’s last victory prior to Abu Dhabi was the German Grand Prix in July. Hamilton’s victory on Sunday was his third overall this season. Coming in second and preventing a 1-2 McLaren result was Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. The Spanish F1 driver finished the 55-lap race 8.4 seconds behind Hamilton.

Hamilton’s McLaren teammate Jenson Button finished a far third, more than 25 seconds behind. Rounding out the top five were Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Vettel, who has already been declared the champion for the second-straight season, retired in the first lap after suffering a punctured tire.

The 2011 F1 season will end on November 27 with the Brazil Grand Prix, where Vettel will be shooting for his 12th win of the year, as well as a record 15th pole position in a single season.
