French Open Champ Schiavone Booted Out of Wimbledon
Italian fifth seed Francesca Schiavone became the biggest name to crash out on the first day at Wimbledon, losing to Vera Dushevina of Russia in a match that lasted almost three hours. Schiavone, the French Open champion, won the first set, 7-6, but could not maintain her composure as she dropped the next two frames, 5-7, 1-6, for her second-straight defeat since winning her first grand slam title at Roland Garros.
Dushevina, who has never survived the first round at the All England Club, dominated the third set, after matching Schiavone shot or shot in the second set. Schiavone was graceful in defeat, but blamed herself for failing to take advantage of her chances in the second set. “It was a tough match…But she played very well and I didn’t take my chance in the second set.”
It was a fruitful day for the Russians, as Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva, and Maria Kirilenko all advanced to the second round. Five-time champion Venus Williams, Justin Henin, and Jelena Jankovic were also day-one winners.
