Gerard Smith, TV On The Radio Bassist, Dies of Cancer
Gerard Smith, the bassist of art rock band TV on the Radio, died on Wednesday after losing his battle with lung cancer. He was 34.
TV on the Radio confirmed Smith’s death in a message posted on the band’s official website. “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20, 2011. We will miss him terribly.” Smith, who joined the critically-acclaimed band in 2005, had taken a leave of absence from TV on the Radio to deal with the disease.
Back in March, the band had said that Smith was responding well to treatment. “Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care,” the band said in an announcement last month. “Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard’s legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family.”
Smith played bass and keyboards in three TV on the Radio albums—2006’s “Return to Cookie Mountain,” 2008’s “Dear Science,” and this year’s “Nine Types of Light.”
