Glee Creator Calls for Newsweek Boycott
The creator of the hit television show Glee has called for a boycott of the international magazine Newsweek until it apologizes for an article it has published regarding gay actors playing heterosexual roles.
Ryan Murphy called for the boycott of the magazine after the article Straight Jacket by Ramin Setoodeh was released some weeks ago. In the article he said that while it was easy for straight actors to play gay and still enjoy Hollywood stardom (like Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain), the reverse seems unachievable.
The article came in the wake of the role of Sean Hayes (Jack of Will and Grace) as a straight guy in the Broadway revival of Promises, Promises. The author said that it was weird watching Hayes play a straight character.
Setoodeh then described Jonathan Groff‘s (pictured) role as Jesse St. James in Glee as something like a “theater queen.”
The author has already received lots of complaints. He already issued a follow-up article Out of Focus to explain himself.
