2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup Finals: USA vs. Mexico

Hopes run high for the United States men’s national soccer team as it takes on Mexico for the championship of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This will be the second consecutive Gold Cup final between the two. Brian Ching, the only American player on the team that beat Mexico in the title fight two years ago, called the confrontation “fun, intense and exciting.”

Winning this tournament would rub out a whole lot of pain for the Mexicans, who are 0-9-2 on U.S. soil since 2000.

The top players of Team USA won’t be on the field for today’s match, but soccer fans should watch nevertheless, because certainly a few of these brave American substitutes have earned a shot to play on the 2010 World Cup team.

Game time is 3 p.m. EDT at the Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

UPDATE: Mexico won the Gold Cup following a very convincing 5-0 victory against Team USA. Carlos Vela scored once and set up two goals for El Tri. All goals were scored in the second half.
