2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup Semifinals: Mexico vs. Costa Rica
Mexico and Costa Rica collide in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup—set to battle for a spot in Sunday’s championship at Giants Stadium.
Los Ticos advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2003 after defeating Guadeloupe 5-0, while El Tri is fresh off a 4-0 victory against Haiti.
Israel Martinez is out for tonight’s game after hurting his left knee when he was running during a training session this week. The Mexican midfielder is the only player who won’t be able to play.
Despite their one-sided victory in the last round, the Mexicans have not been at their best for some time although they did manage to beat Costa Rica 2-0 when they last met during a World Cup qualifier back in March.
Game time is 10 p.m. EDT at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
UPDATE: Mexico will meet the United States for the Gold Cup final in New York on Sunday after beating Costa Rica 5-3 in penalty kicks. The two teams were tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes.
