A Korean couple has been arrested for allegedly letting their three-month-old daughter starve to death while raising a virtual baby online.

Kim Yoo-chul, 41, and his partner Choi Mi-sun, 25, spent 12 hours a night at a neighborhood internet cafe while their real child was left home alone at their apartment in Suwon, South Korea.

An autopsy showed the baby’s death was caused by a long period of malnutrition.

Cops say the pair had become obsessed with raising an avatar daughter called Anima in the popular role-playing game Prius Online. The game allows players to build a life in a virtual world, which includes choosing a job, interacting with other users and earning an extra avatar to nurture once they reach a certain stage.

Online games are extremely popular in South Korea. Last month, a man died after reportedly playing for five days without taking many breaks or meals.
