Manny Pacquiao Defies Odds Anew, Wins Congress Seat
Congressman Manny Pacquiao, how does that sound? Boxing fans all over the world might want to get used to calling the seven-time world champion that after the Filipino banger shrugged off his underdog image to win a congressional seat in his native Philippines. Pacquiao defeated by a landslide his closest rival in the race for the congressional seat in his wife’s home province of Sarangani.
Pacquiao was considered the underdog in the election as he was fighting a scion of a moneyed and politically well-entrenched clan in Sarangani. The world boxing champion was also coming off a loss in the previous election. However, this time Pacquiao would not be denied, winning by a mile, with more than 100,000 votes against Roy Chiongbian, who garnered a little over 54,000 votes.
Top Rank honcho Bob Arum, who helped campaign for Pacquiao, was ecstatic with having a congressman in his boxing stable, saying the seven-division champion was not only a great boxer, but a great person as well. “This kid spent a fortune running for office. And he did it not to aggrandize himself but because he really believes he can make a difference.”
