Mentor Harry Connick Jr Played Piano for American Idol Top Five
Mentor of the week Harry Connick, Jr. was not contended with just coaching the remaining top five finalists of the ninth season of American Idol. He also wrote the arrangements for them and played the piano for them during the performance night.
Host Ryan Seacrest began the show by saying that a superstar will be backing up the idols. Connick then delivered the opening line “This is American Idol.”
About the help he gave the contestants, Connick playfully said, “”You think Shania Twain was up in here doing this?”
The theme for the week is songs by the legendary Frank Sinatra.
The finalists sang out the following songs:
- Aaron Kelly – Fly Me to the Moon
- Casey James – Blue Skies
- Cyrstal Bowersox – Summer Wind
- Michael Lynche – The Way You Look Tonight
- Lee DeWyze – That’s Life
Among the five, the one who generated the least favorable comments from the judges was James. Judge Randy Jackson said, “This was, like, for me, your worst performance, dude. You were kind of out of your element.” Judge Kara DioGuardi exclaimed, “You kind of sound like a lamb.”
Meanwhile, DeWyze speared the best reviews with judge Ellen DeGeneres saying, “I think if this was the last night of the performance, you would have just won the whole thing.” Judge Simon Cowell said, “”You gave it a hundred and ten percent and I think it was, for all of us, by far, the best performance of the night.”
