MTV VMA Nominations Out: Katy Perry Leads with 9

Katy Perry and Adele are expected to duke it out for the most number of Moonmen next month after they ran away with the lion’s share of the nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards announced by the music network earlier this week.

Perry leads everyone else with nine nominations, including for Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Pop Video—all for the single “Firework.” Perry also received nominations for her collaboration with Kanye West. The two music superstars’s song “E.T.” is nominated for Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Special Effects. Perry’s ninth nomination is for the single “Teenage Dream,” which is in contention for the Best Cinematography award.

Adele is also nominated in all but two of the categories where Perry is a nominee, ensuring a head on clash for the two artists. Adele’s nominations are all for her monster hit “Rolling in the Deep,” which has topped three U.S. Billboard charts, including the ubiquitous Billboard Hot 100.

The MTV Video Music Awards 2011 will be held on August 28 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
