Former New York State Senator Joseph Bruno was convicted in two out of eight counts of federal felony Monday, December 7. He might be sentenced of up 20 years of imprisonment per each felony count and might be fined of up to $250,000, again on each felony count. He is 80 years old.
His sentence schedule will be on March 31.
A jury of twelve has found him guilty in 2 counts, not guilty in five and failed to agree on the last (eighth) count. The two counts that might send him to jail are first, taking of 11 payments totaling in $3.2 million from companies for work he never did and second, failing to disclose participation in a partnership involving thoroughbred race horses.
The jury sentenced the Republican state senator after hearing testimonies from about 70 witnesses.
Bruno is of course going for an appeal. He said upon leaving the court, “In my mind and in my heart, it is not over until it’s over. And I think it’s far from over.”
