NYPD Shuts Down Times Square Block
A block in the busy sector of Times Square was shut down evening of Saturday, May 1, after a report of a smoking car was found in the corner of 45th Street and Seventh Avenue.
A call was received between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM of a car smoking in the area. New York Police Department (NYPD) blocked off the area from 42nd Street up to 47th Street including Seventh Avenue and Broadway. A bomb squad was dispatched to investigate the vehicle.
The vehicle was only described to be a dark-colored SVU. Only smoke was seen from it and no fire. In any case, fire trucks were also stationed near the vehicle to douse it if something happens.
“The SUV was smoking. There was a flash and we put two and two together,” said a New York City firefighter.
Some Broadway shows were delayed for an hour due to the incident.
Full evacuation was finished by 8 PM and the area is still inaccessible by 9 PM.
