Oscar Grant execution video sparks anger
More than 100 people were arrested in violent protests over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a transit police officer.
“The crowd started to become more agitated, more hostile, started throwing stuff at the police,” said Oakland Police spokesman Jeff Thomason. He said charges against those arrested include inciting a riot, assault on a police officer, vandalism, rioting and unlawful assembly.
Mayor Ron Dellums urged residents to remain calm after protesters stormed the streets of downtown Oakland Wednesday, setting a car on fire and creating a near-riot that lasted several hours.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer who pulled the trigger, also resigned yesterday. He had been scheduled to answer questions from investigators about the incident.
