Premier League: Arsenal Edge Blackburn
Arsenal were made to sweat at Ewood Park on Saturday before finally putting away a stubborn Blackburn Rovers side, 2-1, for their second-straight victory in the young Premier League season.
Theo Walcott, who scored a hat-trick against Blackpool last week, opened the scoring for The Gunners with a powerful low shot that zoomed past Paul Robinson in the 19th minute. However, Arsene Wenger’s boys would not get away unscathed in enemy territory, as Mame Diouf fired the equalizer for the Rovers seven minutes later.
The restart saw the home side launch an attack that almost put Arsenal behind, but Morten Gamst Pedersen’s 50th minute strike from afar failed to find the net. The final goal came a minute later when Andrey Arshavin was set free after a mad scramble inside the box, giving Arsenal a 2-1 lead that stayed to the end.
Meanwhile, Chelsea maintained their clean slate with another dominating show at Stamford Bridge, this time feasting on minnows Stoke City, 2-0. The win allowed The Blues to remain on top of the table with a perfect nine points in three games. In other matches: Blackpool drew with Fulham 2-2, Tottenham Hotspur bowed to Wigan Athletic, 0-1, while Wolverhampton and Newcastle United settled for a 1-1 split.
