Premier League: Liverpool vs. Wigan Athletic
Liverpool will be looking to return to fourth place in the Premier League standings by beating Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium tonight.
With Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester City all hoping to trump the Reds in the race, Rafa Benitez is urging his side to take a cautious approach against the Latics. The Merseysiders are boosted by the recent returns of Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun from injury. They will also be hopeful of improving their goal difference, particularly with Steven Gerrard and Torres both set to start.
Right now Wigan is fighting to avoid relegation. The Latics are winless in their last nine matches in all competitions, and have scored just two goals in their last six EPL games. Portsmouth has already ‘clinched’ last place but there’s going to be a fight to avoid the other two relegation spots currently held by Hull City and Burnley.
“The Liverpool game is a massive game for us, and we have to pick ourselves up and make sure we’re ready for it,” said Wigan defender Titus Bramble. “It’s a real dogfight at the bottom of the league and we need to compete for 90 minutes and not 45.”
The match kicks-off at 20:00 GMT.
UPDATE: Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega scored the only goal of the game as Wigan dented Liverpool’s Champions League hope with a 1-0 victory in the EPL.
