Premier League: United Beat Everton, Close in on Title

Javier Hernandez headed home a late goal to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Everton that pushed Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys closer to a record 19th Premier League title.

Hernandez’s 12th goal of the season came in the 84th minute as United recovered from a disappointing 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup semifinal last weekend. The win was important for United as it increased their lead at the table to nine points over Chelsea and Arsenal, who were scheduled to face West Ham and Bolton Wanderers, respectively, late Saturday. United can clinch the title with victories against Arsenal on May 1 and Chelsea on May 8.

Everton, who had not won at Old Trafford since 1992, looked headed to salvaging a point against the league leaders as Tim Howard held his own against United’s attempts at goal, including two from Hernandez in a span of six minutes in the first half. The visitors’ best chance for an upset came in the 68th minute when a Jack Rodwell low drive had United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar scrambling for a finger-tip save. Hernandez had the last laugh, however, as he connected off a deflected Antonio Valencia cross with six minutes left in regulation time.
