At last, South America gets an Olympics!

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, beating Madrid in the final round of voting after Chicago, backed by a personal visit from President Barack Obama, was eliminated in the first round.

Wild scenes erupted across Brazil as IOC president Jacques Rogge announced their triumph, but the sight was in grave contrast to the stunned silence among the crowd gathered in Daley plaza in Chicago to celebrate what they expected to be a runaway win.

Tokyo went out in the second round, leaving Madrid as the only challenge to the Brazilian city’s historic chance. But in the end, it was Rio’s passionate pleas to finally include South America in the Olympic rotation that won out.
