Wimbledon 2009: Dinara Safina vs. Venus Williams
Top ranked Dinara Safina will square off against Wimbledon defending champion Venus Williams in the tournament’s semifinal round.
Williams is looking for her sixth All England Club crown and is trying to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1991-93 to win three in a row. On the other hand, Safina is still searching for a first Grand Slam title after finishing runner-up in the 2008 and 2009 French Opens as well as the Australian Open this year.
If Serena beats number-four seed Elena Dementieva later this afternoon, and Venus gets past the 23-year-old Russian, they would set up the fourth all-Williams title match at SW19. The sisters have featured in seven of the last eight finals and there were few signs yesterday that the family monopoly is about to be broken.
UPDATE: Venus Williams has easily reached her eighth Wimbledon final by routing World No.1 Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0. Williams took just 51 minutes to beat her Russian opponent in the most one-sided women’s semi-final in 40 years.
