Serie A to set up new league

Italy’s Serie A is poised to split from Serie B to form a new division similar to the English Premier League.

Yesterday, 19 of the 20 Serie A clubs voted to break away from their domestic competition, the Lega Calcio.

The two divisions have been unable to reach an agreement over how money is distributed evenly between each club.

“We have created a new league for Serie A,” Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini said. “This time it’s for real. I’m not happy but it was necessary.”

Maurizio Beretta, former director of Italian television channel Rai Uno, has been chosen to set up the new organization.
