Tony Cowell Blurts Out that Brother Simon Cowell is Leaving American Idol
Tony Cowell made the announcement in his weekly radio podcast The Cowell Factor Tuesday, December 22, that Simon is preparing for his last season in the hit US TV show.
“A press statement is being prepared which will confirm what everyone expected — Simon will leave ‘Idol’ at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of ‘The X Factor’ to US TV in 2011,” Tony Cowell claimed, according to Britain’s Sun newspaper.
The Sun and Fox, where AI is televised, are both under the Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp media empire.
Cowell’s publicist and Fox do not want to give any comments as of the meantime regarding the reports.
Meanwhile, the podcast can no longer be accessed. Simon has repeatedly said that he is getting bored with his job on the show. If he does leave, he will be the second of three original judges to leave the talent search. Paula Abdul is not returning for season 9 and has been replaced by Ellen DeGeneres.
American Idol despite slipping viewership, is still one of the top primetime programs.
Meanwhile, the show has already announced the full schedule for the upcoming season: American Idol Season 9 Schedule
