UEFA Champions League: Chelsea vs. Inter Milan
Tonight, Internazionale boss Jose Mourinho faces Chelsea for the first time since he left his former club in 2007.
The Portuguese led the Blues to back-to-back Premier League championships in 2005 and 2006 and has enjoyed similar domestic glory with Inter Milan. But despite having moved on, he had nothing but praise for his former players— John Terry and Frank Lampard.
“They are two players who perform week after week, year after year,” Mourinho said in a recent interview. “They are like Porto wine; the older the better.”
These two teams met at the Rose Bowl in July and the West Londoners won 2-0. Didier Drogba scored on that event, and the man who was brought to the club by Mourinho in July 2004 will again be Chelsea’s main man having scored seven goals in his past six games.
And Mourinho’s close relationship with the Ivorian striker will be put to one side for 90 minutes when Inter and Chelsea take to the field at the San Siro later this evening.
The Nerazzurri might have been dominating the Italian league but when it comes to performing in the UEFA Champions League, they have been a huge disappointment.
The Blues, now headed by Carlo Ancelotti, will be looking to take some kind of advantage back to Stamford Bridge for the return leg of their round-of-16 clash.
The match kicks-off at 20:45 CET (2:45 pm ET).
UPDATE: Mourinho got one over his former club as Inter Milan defeated Chelsea 2-1. Salomon Kalou equalized for the Blues in the 51st minute before Esteban Cambiasso scored the winning goal.
