United Kingdom to Mobilize Three Royal Navy Ships to Help Stranded Britons
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that three royal navy ships will be used to help Britons stranded abroad due to airspace restrictions brought by an ash cloud that was spewed by a volcano in Iceland.
Joining the Prime Minister during the announcement were Transport Secretary Lord Adonis and Foreign Secretary David Miliband. The decision was made during a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee.
The ships to be mobilized are HMS Ark Royal, HMS Ocean and HMS Albion. They are heading for Spain and unidentified ports. Estimates indicate that around 150,000 Britons are stranded abroad.
The announcement came after the air ban was extended until 0100H BST Tuesday, April 20.
Gordon also declared that airlines should be given help as they have lost millions of dollars in revenue because of the closing of airports.
Meanwhile, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano (pictured) sent more tremors in the area Monday, April 19. However, the ash column rising from the volcano has already reduced.
