US Open 2009: Roger Federer vs. Robin Soderling

World No.1 Roger Federer takes on twelfth-seed Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals of the  2009 U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Swiss tennis ace will have his third straight Grand Slam clash against Soderling, whom he worked over at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He may have defeated him 11 times in 11 meetings, but Federer will take nothing for granted when he faces the Swede later this evening.

If Soderling can serve well and keep the ball to Federer’s more vulnerable backhand side, he has a shot. If not, expect another Feder-Nadal clash in the final.

Game time is around 9:15 p.m. ET, after the Melanie Oudin vs. Caroline Wozniacki match.

UPDATE: Roger Federer advanced to an amazing 22nd consecutive Grand Slam semifinal by eliminating Robin Soderling, 6-0, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6). In Saturday’s semifinals, the Swiss will play fourth seed Novak Djokovic, who eliminated No. 10 Fernando Verdasco of Spain earlier Wednesday.
