US Open 2009: Rafael Nadal vs. Juan Martin del Potro
Former world No.1 Rafael Nadal will face Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in today’s delayed men’s U.S. Open semifinals.
After three days of rain induced agony, Nadal finally put away eleventh seed Fernando Gonzalez to reach this round. The Spaniard needed just 32 minutes to complete a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-0 victory over the Chilean.
Pundits are saying that Nadal is unlikely to enjoy such a smooth ride against the 6’6″ Del Potro. Although the man from Mallorca leads 4-2 in their head-to-head meetings, the Argentine captured the pair’s last two matches on hard-courts, and he’s certainly playing the best tennis of his life.
If Nadal can get past Del Potro, the current world No.3 will have a chance to become the seventh male player to complete the career Grand Slam.
This match is scheduled to take place sometime after 12:15 p.m. ET.
UPDATE: Del Potro reached his first ever Grand Slam final following a straight-sets win (6-2 6-2 6-2) over Nadal. The Argentine will play Roger Federer in the championship.
