US Open 2009: Rafael Nadal vs. Gael Monfils
Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils, two of the most energetic players in the world of tennis, will square off tonight for a spot in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.
The World No.2 holds a 4-1 head-to-head lead. The only victory that the French ace has against Nadal took place in Qatar this year in the quarterfinals of that tournament. But on Sunday, the 23-year-old Spaniard sustained what appeared to be a serious abdominal injury that required treatment during his straight-set victory against compatriot Nicolas Almagro.
Monfils may not have the talent that Rafa has but he matches him in strength and stamina. Now, can Nadal win the U.S. Open carrying a painful injury in his midsection?
Should Nadal triumph in Flushing Meadows on Sunday, he will complete the career Grand Slam.
Game time is 8:45 p.m. ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
UPDATE: Nadal started off shaky but recovered quickly to beat Monfils 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 and reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Nadal meets No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile next.
