Carling Cup Final: Aston Villa vs. Manchester United
Today is the Carling Cup Final! Aston Villa will battle against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium to be the 50th League Cup champions.
United will try to retain their trophy but they will face a difficult hurdle against Aston Villa. The Red Devils are the defending champions after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in a penalty shootout last year. The Villains, on the other hand, were the first team to hold the Carling Cup trophy in 1961 when they defeated Rotherham United 3-2. They already have won five times in the competition. Villa’s last triumph was 14 years ago when they beat Leeds United 3-0 at the old Wembley Stadium in 1996. Both Aston and United are making their eighth League Cup final appearances. Only Liverpool have made more, with 10 appearances in the championships.
If Manchester United will emerge as champions in this year, they will be the third club to win consecutive finals after Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Aston Villa: Friedel, Dunne, Downing, Young, Milner, Agbonlahor, Heskey, Petrov, Cuellar, Warnock, Collins.
Manchester United: Kuszczak, Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Carrick, Park, Owen, Berbatov.
UPDATE: Wayne Rooney came off the bench to score the winner as United defeated Aston Villa 2-1 to grab the 2010 Carling Cup.
