However, Serena has insisted that she will defend her title even though she is not completely fit. The American was clearly hindered by a painful left knee as she lost to Russia’s Elena Dementieva in the championship of the Sydney International last week.

The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis competitions held each year. Since 1988, the tournament has been contested on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
