‘Watchmen’ conquers box-office
The much-anticipated release of Watchmen, the film adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, got mixed reviews, but that did not lessen the high level of interest among comic book fans.
According to Media by Numbers, Watchmen took the top spot at the North American box office, earning $55.7 million over the weekend– the biggest opening of 2009 so far. It also premiered in more theaters (3,611) than any other R-rated movie in history, and it averaged a remarkable $15,413 per venue.
Directed by Zack Snyder, Watchmen is a movie about twisted superheroes. Though their glory days are over, these former crime-fighters are drawn back into action by the murder of a former colleague, The Comedian, which turns out to be the leading edge of a much wider, more disturbing conspiracy.
