Webber Takes Spanish GP Pole
For the first time in this year’s Formula One season, a driver not named Sebastian Vettel will start from pole on race day.
Mark Webber finished with the best qualifying time on Saturday at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, ending Red Bull teammate Vettel’s run of four-straight pole wins this season and five overall dating back to last year’s Abu Dhabi GP. Webber clocked in with his best effort at 1m 20.981s in Q3 to edge Vettel’s 1m 21.181s. Starting just behind the two Red Bulls on Sunday is McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, whose best time in qualifying was a 1m 21.961 effort also in Q3.
Former world champion Fernando Alonso will start from the fourth grid. while Jenson Button rounded out the top five in qualifying. Renault’s Vitaly Petrov was sixth, while Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was seventh. Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado, and Michael Schumacher closed out the top ten.
Vettel, the defending world champion, has won three of the four races this year, including the Turkish GP earlier this month. The only blemish on Vettel’s record this year was the Chinese GP, which was won by Hamilton.
