Wife Wendi Deng Saves Rupert Murdoch From Shaving-Cream Thrower
Wendi Deng, the 42-year-old wife of News Corp. big boss Rupert Murdoch, has the Web abuzz after she smacked down a British comedian who tried to splatter her husband’s face with a pie plate full of shaving cream during a Parliament hearing on Tuesday.
With Murdoch about to finish answering questions from members of the British Parliament over the phone-hacking scandal involving his now-defunct News of the World tabloid, a man identified in media reports as Jonnie Marbles attacked the media mogul with the foam splat. Showing the reflexes of a martial artist, Deng quickly sprang from her seat behind Murdoch and attacked the protestor with a flying slap before picking up the pie plate and tossing it back to the attacker’s face. All that action was over in a few seconds and before police officers inside Parliament could react.
Police eventually handcuffed and arrested Marbles but not before they were admonished by Murdoch’s son, James, who was also questioned by members of Parliament. “Why didn’t you see what was happening?” James Murdoch reportedly asked police, according to the Guardian.
Deng’s exploits immediately sent Twitter crazy, with CBS Evening News’s Katie Couric calling Wendi’s protective instinct a personification of the term “Tiger Mother,” referring to the phrase credited to author Amy Chua. “Wow, wendy [sic] murdoch giving whole new meaning to the term tiger mother … insanity,” Coric said in tweet.
