“Wimpy Kid” Bullies Box-Office Competition
“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” showed a lot of muscle at the box office this weekend with an estimated $24.4 million in ticket sales to open on top of the heap despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
“Wimpy Kid,” whose original opened second behind “Alice in Wonderland” with $22.1 million last year, again takes moviegoers to the world of brothers Rodrick and Greg Heffley, played by Devon Bostick and Zachary Gordon, respectively. Opening in second place was Zack Snyder’s female-ensemble, action-fantasy “Sucker Punch,” which bowed with an estimated $19 million. “Sucker Punch” features young beauties Abbie Cornish, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, and Jamie Chung.
Last week’s box-office champ, Bradley Cooper’s “Limitless,” held on strong as it shed only 19 percent for an estimated weekend take of $15.2 million, which pushed its North American total to $41.8 million. The Matthew McConaughey starrer “The Lincoln Lawyer” benefited from good word of mouth to pocket another $11 million, representing a drop of only 17 percent from last week. The animated film “Rango” grossed $ 9.8 million to take its domestic total beyond the $100-million mark and round out the top five.
