Corporate Vice President of Windows Product Management Mike Nash announced via a blog post that Microsoft’s next version of Windows will retain its moniker “Windows 7”.

“But now is a good time to announce that we’ve decided to officially call the next version of Windows, Windows 7.” Nash wrote on his blog.

Nash said that they chose Window 7 as the official name for the product because of simplicity. He explained that they have used inspirational monikers (XP, Vista) and dates (Windows 98, 2000) for their recent releases. And since new versions of Windows do not ship on a yearly basis that kind of branding doesn’t fit.

“Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7″ just makes sense.”

In the coming weeks, Windows will be talking about the details of the release of Windows 7 at the PDC and at WinHEC.
