World Cup Final 2011: Japan wins Women’s World Cup, beats U.S. on penalty shootout [VIDEO]
The Japanese Women’s football team has won the Women’s World Cup in Germany, stunning the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 draw.
The Americans missed dozens of chances throughout the game before giving a goal to Japan to tie the game just six minutes from winning their third World Cup title. Shannon Boxx, Carli Lloyd and Tobin Heath all missed their penalty shootout tries for the Americans.
American goalkeeper Hope Solo made one save in penalty kicks but she guessed wrong twice and just missed one more to finally give Japan its first World Cup title.
This is Japan’s first ever World Cup title.
